The distance between New Zealand and its traditional allies has grown wider, as Australia signs a major new defence pact with the US and UK that will deliver a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines to the Pacific.

The trilateral defence partnership, dubbed AUKUS, would grant Australia access to the US’ nuclear submarine secrets and bolster co-operation in foreign policy, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies, with the explicit intention of countering China’s rising power in the Indo-Pacific region.

The pact is being called AUKUS, verbally resembling Roman underworld god and punisher of broken oaths Orcus, and sees Australia (A), the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US) sharing technology, supply chains and industrial bases.

Perhaps most notably, among the technology being shared is capacity for Australia to build nuclear-powered submarines with the stated aim of promoting stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

A new defence pact has been announced between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States with the trio intending to share advanced technologies, likely to counter China's growing dominance.

The three nations will share information in key technological areas, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and nuclear submarines.

As three of New Zealand's traditional allies announced a new defence pact on Thursday, Aotearoa's nuclear-free stance was back in the spotlight as a central pillar to our nation's identity.

New Zealand's absence from the new AUKUS pact - made up of some of our closest partners with a focus on the Indo-Pacific - raised some eyebrows here and overseas. Claims of Aotearoa being side-lined have been used by some to add to a narrative perpetuated earlier this year that it was on the outer of the Five Eyes group due to its relationship with China.

Those that know me, know I want to increase spending on our defence force (not just the Navy) However, I want to get back to at least a four frigate navy and I want to up-spec our navy and give them some teeth...

At a time when the economy continues to face the costs imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic it may seem premature to be exploring opportunities for building the Royal New Zealand Navy of the future, but now is the very time to be doing so.

For the first time since the Anzac-class frigate program commenced in the 1980s, the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) and Royal Australian Navy (RAN) are simultaneously undertaking a comprehensive fleet recapitalisation. By the mid-2030s, the RNZN and RAN are both due to replace their current surface warfare, patrol, sealift, hydrographic, and mine countermeasures vessels. This presents a unique opportunity to reinvigorate and strengthen the trans-Tasman relationship by pursuing a coordinated and consolidated approach to maritime capability acquisition that would enhance interoperability and reinforce a sense of shared purpose and direction between the allies.

The New Zealand Defence Force is to participate in an international defence exercise in South East Asia and will also interact with the United Kingdom’s Carrier Strike Group (CSG) as it conducts engagement activities in the Indo-Pacific region.

Royal New Zealand Navy frigate HMNZS Te Kaha and replenishment tanker HMNZS Aotearoa, with a Seasprite helicopter on board, have this week departed Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf for the next 2-3 months at sea.
