A leading economist says that applying New Zealand's top tax rate to earnings over $70,000 means that middle-class Kiwis are hurting and the income threshold should be increased.

Speaking to The AM Show on Monday, Cameron Bagrie of Bagrie Economics said that taking $0.33c in the dollar from income over $70,000 is "just ridiculous."

Rocket Lab has won a $15.5 million Nasa contract to launch a small satellite to the moon next year.

The tech company will send a satellite into the same lunar orbit targeted by Nasa for Gateway, an outpost to be used by astronauts before descending to the moon's surface.

More than three tonnes of illegal drugs were seized at New Zealand's border last year. 

The seizures mean that an estimated $1.4 billion of potential social harm from methamphetamine was prevented, Customs New Zealand says.

Girls who want to wear pants or shorts at a Southland high school have to see a guidance counsellor first.

James Hargest College in Invercargill is in the process of updating its uniform but in the meantime, girls who want to wear unisex pants or shorts must have it cleared by their parents. To do that, they are required to visit a counsellor.
