The first big real-world study of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine to be independently reviewed shows the shot is highly effective at preventing COVID-19, in a potentially landmark moment for countries desperate to end lockdowns and reopen economies.

The U.S. Air Force’s top officer wants the service to develop an affordable, lightweight fighter to replace hundreds of Cold War-vintage F-16s and complement a small fleet of sophisticated—but costly and unreliable—stealth fighters.

The result would be a high-low mix of expensive “fifth-generation” F-22s and F-35s and inexpensive “fifth-generation-minus” jets, explained Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Brown Jr.

A new variant of COVID-19 spreading rapidly in New York City carries a mutation that may weaken the effectiveness of vaccines, according to researchers.

The new strain, B.1.526, was first detected in samples collected in New York City in November. The variant now accounts for roughly one in four viral sequences stored in a scientific database, according to a report by the New York Times.
