Thales Australia has cut the first steel for New Zealand’s new fleet of Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicles (PMV) at its factory in the Australian State of Victoria. New Zealand ordered an additional 43 of the type in 2020, to replace its aging fleet of armoured Pinzgauer transports. Previously, in 2015, New Zealand’s special forces, the New Zealand Special Air Service (NZSAS), acquired five of the type from Australia which they have operated ever since.

The Government is being urged to push for the safe passage of anyone who is eligible to get out of Afghanistan but is stranded there, now the Taliban have taken control.
On Thursday, New Zealand made its last evacuation flight out of Kabul following the bomb attack at the airport which killed scores of people.

Employers continue to be “shocked” they can not unilaterally reduce workers’ pay during the level 4 lockdown, says an employment law expert.
An Auckland electrical contractor sent an email on Thursday saying that staff not working on construction sites would receive 80 per cent of their normal wage for this week’s pay, consisting of $600 from the Government’s wage subsidy and a top-up from the company.

A total of 370 people are on their way to New Zealand after being evacuated from Afghanistan.
It was still not know how many were New Zealand passport holders, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) spokesperson said.

China has vowed to retaliate if the US accuses China of leaking covid from its lab at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. China contests that the coronavirus came from Fort Detrick in Maryland, and it has some sick beats to back that claim up. According to a research lab in Canada, Apple is helping the Chinese Communist Party censor what people can write on their phones in Taiwan (sidenote: why is one of China's dead leaders on the list of forbidden terms?). There are 82 new cases of COVID-19 in the community, the Ministry of Health says.
Saturday's update means the total number of cases associated with this outbreak sits at 429, of which 415 are in Auckland and 14 are in Wellington. The Wellington number didn't increase on Saturday.
