As three of New Zealand's traditional allies announced a new defence pact on Thursday, Aotearoa's nuclear-free stance was back in the spotlight as a central pillar to our nation's identity.
New Zealand's absence from the new AUKUS pact - made up of some of our closest partners with a focus on the Indo-Pacific - raised some eyebrows here and overseas. Claims of Aotearoa being side-lined have been used by some to add to a narrative perpetuated earlier this year that it was on the outer of the Five Eyes group due to its relationship with China.

There are fears the Delta outbreak devastating Fiji could hitch a ride to Northland, with about 50 yachts set to sail into the Bay of Islands soon to avoid the Pacific's cyclone season.
Northland’s Opua has been the designated port of arrival for all small craft in New Zealand since 2020, when Covid-19 border controls restricted who can sail into the country.

More than 60 human rights groups and activists are sending the Foreign Affairs Minister an open letter calling for the Government to escalate support for those remaining in Afghanistan.
Concerns about a humanitarian crisis and potential economic collapse in the central Asia nation continue to mount, as poverty rates spiral in the wake of the Islamic fundamentalist Taliban seizing control in August. The treatment of women is also under scrutiny, with the Taliban's all-male Government already taking a hardline approach.
