French defence contractor Naval Group is preparing to send Australia a bill after a NZ$93 billion contract was sunk by a secret deal between Canberra, Washington and London to share technology on nuclear-powered submarines and formed Aukus, a new three-nation defence alliance.
Naval Group chief executive Pierre Eric Pommellet told France's Le Figaro newspaper in an article published on Wednesday that a bill would be sent to Canberra in the coming weeks. Australia had agreed in 2016 to buy 12 diesel-powered submarines from the French, and the break fee – on top of the more than a billion dollars reportedly spent during the design phase – could be substantial.

Kiwis, naturally, will have a range of responses to it. Whatever they conclude, I believe three fundamental points should inform thinking.

According to Opposition spokesperson for Defence and Veterans Chris Penk MP, New Zealand must learn lessons from Afghanistan if we are to respond properly to the moral and military challenges of the future.
Let’s talk about Afghanistan. The security situation in that country has undergone such a dramatic transformation in the past several weeks that it’s probably unwise of me to record my thoughts on it now. After all, the next several weeks could yet register a further shift – as the situation is clearly not settled, as I write – that other lessons to be learnt may well overtake any that I offer now.
