As Myanmar’s military celebrated the annual Armed Forces Day holiday with a parade Saturday (local time) in the country's capital, soldiers and police elsewhere reportedly killed dozens of people as they suppressed protests in the deadliest bloodletting since last month's coup.
A count issued by an independent researcher in Yangon who has been compiling near-real time death tolls put the total as darkness fell at 93, spread over more than two dozen cities and towns. The online news site Myanmar Now reported the death toll had reached 91.

The administration of US President Joe Biden has taken a wrong first step, North Korea said on Saturday (local time), revealing "deep-seated hostility" by criticising its self-defensive missile test.
On Friday (local time), North Korea said it had launched a new type of tactical short-range ballistic missile. Biden said the test violated UN Security Council resolutions, but he remained open to diplomacy with Pyongyang.

Dunedin Hospital has hit capacity and the Southern District Health Board has declared a "code black" as it calls on the public to avoid the emergency department if possible.
SDHB chief executive Chris Fleming said this afternoon that the hospital was doing its best to deal with heavy demand at a time of high occupancy, but patients could experience delays and some operations had been postponed.

Labour and the Greens are under fire for voting down a law that would make it mandatory to notify schools when there's a sex offender nearby.
Informing schools when a sex offender is being placed in the community is not a new practice for Corrections. National MP Matt Doocey's Member's Bill sought to make it mandatory but it was voted down on Wednesday night.
