Mohammad Murad spent a decade working at a New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) base in Bamyan. Ten days ago he was shot and killed in his village bazaar by the Taliban likely because of that work.
The 48-year-old had worked as a guard at the New Zealand-run forward operating base Romero in Kahmard, Bamyan from early in the 2000s for more than 10 years, said Parwiz Hakimi, an interpreter for the NZDF in Bamyan during much of that time. Hakimi, who now lives in New Zealand, heard from Murad’s family that 10 days ago he had been assassinated by the Taliban.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping said on Saturday reunification with Taiwan must happen and will happen peacefully, despite a ratcheting-up of China's threats to attack the island.
Xi spoke on at an official celebration in Beijing's Great Hall of the People the focused largely on the need for the ruling Communist Party to continue to lead China as the country rises in power and influence.

With the swirl of media soundbites, the impression has been created that the Australian government has replaced a diesel-electric French-designed submarine for a nuclear-powered American or British one. This is not the case.
Australia now has no new submarine program at all. We have cancelled the one we had with France and have a statement of intent with the UK and the US to examine the prospect of acquiring nuclear powered submarines.

France’s ambassador to Australia says Australian officials lied to his face and raised the risk of confrontation in Asia by crafting a secret submarine deal with the United States and Britain that undermined trust in democratic alliances.
France is determined to protect its interests in the Indo-Pacific region, and to put “muscle” into Europe’s geopolitical strategy towards an increasingly assertive China, Ambassador Jean-Pierre Thebault said Friday. He spoke in an interview with The Associated Press before heading back to his post in Canberra.

A suicide bomber attacked a mosque in Afghanistan's northeastern Kunduz province on Friday, killing scores of worshippers in the country's third attack this week on a religious institution.
Islamic State claimed responsibility for an attack that state-run Bakhtar news agency said had killed 46 people and wounded 143. Two health officials told Reuters the death toll could be between 70 and 80.
