Foreign Affairs Secretary Chris Seed says evidence around alleged mistreatment of Uighurs is of "great concern" and discussions with China are "ongoing" about a visit by New Zealand diplomats.
It's estimated more than a million Uighurs - a mostly Muslim Turkic minority group that number about 11 million in China's Xinjiang region - have been detained in camps, which have been widely condemned as akin to prisons.

Buying a home is increasingly out of reach for many New Zealanders as housing affordability plummets to historically low levels.
A report by CoreLogic found average property values surged 6.1 percent in the final three months of last year, while they went up more than 11 percent for the whole of 2020.

China hit back on Wednesday at growing criticism by western powers of its treatment of ethnic minorities in the regions of Xinjiang and Tibet and of citizens in the former UK colony of Hong Kong.
Hours earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in a wide-ranging speech to the UN Human Rights Council, said that the Joe Biden administration would denounce atrocities in Xinjiang.

A distress call that led to a wild goose chase in search of a missing yacht later found safe 150km away, is a reminder to all boaties to have two forms of communication on them while out at sea.
The mishap occurred when Rescue Co-ordination Centre NZ received a mayday call from a yacht believed to be sinking on the Coromandel coast on February 17.
