Smoking kills 5,000 Kiwis each year, with massive health and economic costs. Tobacco tax hasn’t stopped people smoking, but it sure has got the Government addicted - raising $2.2 billion each year. Meanwhile, shop-owners get bashed up because the tax means bricks of tobacco are like gold bars in their cupboards.

In writing, once again, about the New Zealand Defence Capability Plan Review, I’m reminded of a TV advert that used to run for Christian Children’s Fund. The script went like this… “As America rushes off to work – a little girl waits…” It flashes between frenetic images of first world problems and a little girl sitting alone on a hillside in the third world. MV Edda Fonn – soon to be HMNZS MANAWANUI (A09 – the fourth of her name) has arrived in New Zealand. The english translation of the ship’s Maori name according to many is “to be brave or steadfast.” However, another translation is ‘Patience.’ Both seem particularly apt for describing the way in which current and former members of the Royal NZ Navy have conducted themselves. This vessel represents, in a political sense, everything that is wrong with the way successive governments deal with national security.
