Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced New Zealand will shut down in response to the community transmission of coronavirus, in two days time.
The most severe response, level 4 of the country's Covid-19 threat system, was announced by Ardern on Monday afternoon.

The Prime Minister's former chief science advisor has called for an "extreme shutdown" amid New Zealand's escalating COVID-19 outbreak.
Sir Peter Gluckman, who served as the inaugural Chief Science Advisor to the Prime Minister of New Zealand from 2009 to 2018, claimed a nationwide lockdown would be "the best thing New Zealand could do" in a tweet on Monday.

The World Health Organization is considering “airborne precautions” for medical staff after a new study showed the coronavirus can survive in the air in some settings.
The virus is transmitted through droplets, or little bits of liquid, mostly through sneezing or coughing, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, head of WHO’s emerging diseases and zoonosis unit, told reporters during a virtual news conference on Monday. “When you do an aerosol-generating procedure like in a medical care facility, you have the possibility to what we call aerosolize these particles, which means they can stay in the air a little bit longer.”
