A private member's bill replacing the verdict of "not guilty by reason of insanity" with "proven but insane" has been stalled after an 11th-hour intervention by Chief Justice Helen Winkelmann.
The sponsor of the bill, Taupō MP Louise Upston, says she is offended by the late intervention after the justice committee had worked hard on refining the bill and unanimously supported it.

The 27-year-old man, who has interim name suppression, is on trial at a court martial at Devonport Naval Base in Auckland.
The alleged offences happened in a taxi and an apartment in Canada last year. Court martials have jurisdiction over offences committed overseas.

New Zealand’s supply of Covid-19 vaccine will get down to “almost zero” by this time next week, officials have warned.
On Tuesday, Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins advised New Zealand will get “very close to running out” of the Pfizer vaccine, with the lowest point expected to be next Tuesday – ahead of another shipment of 150,000 doses arriving that day.

An Antarctic blast is sweeping the nation on Tuesday, bringing icy temperatures, blankets of snow and significant swells to the North Island.
High winds and thick swathes of snow have resulted in multiple flight cancellations and widespread road closures in the South Island, but the north is also bearing the brunt of the polar blast. The capital was hammered by hail earlier this morning, with heavy snow carpeting several areas in the north, including the rural community of Taihape, certain parts of Taranaki and the Wellington region.
