The distance between New Zealand and its traditional allies has grown wider, as Australia signs a major new defence pact with the US and UK that will deliver a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines to the Pacific.
The trilateral defence partnership, dubbed AUKUS, would grant Australia access to the US’ nuclear submarine secrets and bolster co-operation in foreign policy, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies, with the explicit intention of countering China’s rising power in the Indo-Pacific region.

I’m not sure we should be worried that we’ve been left out of this new Australia-UK-US defence pact.
I see that we’re already doing the thing we always do, which is to turn this into a story about ourselves and about how we’ve been "left out" and "sidelined."

The pact is being called AUKUS, verbally resembling Roman underworld god and punisher of broken oaths Orcus, and sees Australia (A), the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US) sharing technology, supply chains and industrial bases.
Perhaps most notably, among the technology being shared is capacity for Australia to build nuclear-powered submarines with the stated aim of promoting stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

ANALYSIS: Only six countries in the world – America, Britain, China, France, India and Russia – currently operate nuclear-powered submarines.
Australia may become the unlikely seventh. In a statement and joint televised appearance on September 15, Joe Biden, Boris Johnson and Scott Morrison, America, Britain and Australia’s leaders, announced what they described as an “enhanced trilateral security partnership”, awkwardly named AUKUS.

US presidents and their offsiders have an unfortunate habit of awkward moments at the expense of their allies, and Prime Minister Scott Morrison has just been added to the honour roll.
In the historic announcement on Thursday of a new trilateral military and technology-sharing agreement between Australia, the US and the UK, President Joe Biden referred to Morrison as “that fellow Down Under, thank you very much pal”.

As three of New Zealand's traditional allies announced a new defence pact on Thursday, Aotearoa's nuclear-free stance was back in the spotlight as a central pillar to our nation's identity.
New Zealand's absence from the new AUKUS pact - made up of some of our closest partners with a focus on the Indo-Pacific - raised some eyebrows here and overseas. Claims of Aotearoa being side-lined have been used by some to add to a narrative perpetuated earlier this year that it was on the outer of the Five Eyes group due to its relationship with China.
