As coronavirus cases spike in Korea, the NZ Defence Force is flying some personnel and their families based in the country home.

More staffers, now aboard the Navy's newest ship as it undergoes sea trials, will set sail for New Zealand when the testing finishes on Thursday, a NZ Defence Force (NZDF) spokeswoman said.

The Leander-class HMNZS Waikato joined the Royal New Zealand Navy in 1966. It was the first New Zealand warship designed to embark a helicopter. However, the flight deck was designed for the small to light utility helicopters; like the Westland Wasp Lynx, and SeaSprite. The Ship had a colourful service history.

The U.S. State Department has approved a possible sale of five C-130J Super Hercules aircraft and related equipment to New Zealand for an estimated cost of $1.4 billion.

The sale will be conducted through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale on Nov. 20.

So how could a naval task group with coalition frigates paired with a LHD perform a number of useful roles beyond warfighting or HADR, including support for operations? How could the LHD enhance those operations?
