Over the next five years New Zealand will face its biggest foreign policy challenge since the nuclear free issue of 35 years ago. As with that issue, the essence of the challenge will be the relationship that New Zealand has with its traditional partners and allies.
The dichotomy is easily described. As the Prime Minister notes, Australia is our oldest and most important ally. However, an increasingly assertive China is our most important trading partner.

Driven by the requirement to expand maritime surveillance and tactical airlift competence, New Zealand’s defence budget is set to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.76 percent from US$2.9 billion in 2021 to US$3.3 billion in 2026, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company. GlobalData’s report, New Zealand Defense Market – Attractiveness, Competitive Landscape and Forecasts to 2026, reveals that the country’s capital defence budget accounted for 27.2 percent of the country’s total defence budget in 2021, an increase of 5.6 percent from 2020.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — The New Zealand Defence Force is using a virtual reality platform that is helping drivers train for amphibious assault missions, a military official told Defense News.
Eight360′s NOVA is an immersive, untethered VR platform shaped like a ball that allows for 360-degree movement on all axes. Mark Baddeley, director of emerging technologies for NZDF’s Joint Defence Services, said the Army is eyeing it to improve driver safety.

The Royal New Zealand Navy’s two Anzac-class frigates, HMNZS Te Kaha and Te Mana, are getting a communications systems upgrade, the defense ministry has announced.
Cabinet has approved NZ$21.2 million (approx. US$14.7M) for the design of a new frigate communications system, which will include a new control system, modern radios, data and voice communication systems.

The New Zealand Defence Force Afghanistan deployment, which has been given an exemption from the COVID-19 lockdown, is en route to the Middle East with twice the amount of troops.
Defence Minister Peeni Henare says due to the developing situation, up to 80 personnel are being deployed - double the amount he said would be sent when the mission was announced on Monday.

New Zealand is sending in the Defence Force to help dozens of Kiwis and Afghan allies stranded in Afghanistan escape following the Taliban's rapid takeover of capital city Kabul.
At her post-Cabinet press conference from the Beehive on Monday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the Government was aware of 53 Kiwis who are still there and seeking to get out, with plans now underway to repatriate them.
