Some experts are calling for New Zealand to full explore its potential to manufacture vaccines. The calls come as the Government refuses to say whether the country's first Covid-19 vaccines will arrive on schedule in the coming weeks amid a soaring global demand.

Some of New Zealand's top health and biotech experts say Aotearoa’s expertise on the farm could be used as another weapon in the fight against Covid-19.

Just before the newly elected members of Myanmar’s parliament were due to be sworn in on Monday, the military detained the country’s de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi; the president, Win Myint; and other key figures from the elected ruling party, the National League for Democracy.

The military later announced it had taken control of the country for 12 months and declared a state of emergency. This is a coup d'etat, whether the military calls it that or not.

Myanmar's military seized power on Monday in a coup against the democratically elected government of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who was detained along with other leaders of her National League for Democracy (NLD) party in early morning raids.

The army said it had carried out the detentions in response to "election fraud", handing power to military chief Min Aung Hlaing and imposing a state of emergency for one year, according to a statement on a military-owned television station. A military spokesman did not answer phone calls seeking further comment.

By 2032, new homes won’t have gas connections, we’ll be cycling twice as much, and you won’t be able to import a petrol car, under a blueprint for making the whole country carbon neutral.

What we would get under the plan is lower household energy bills (for most people), better health, quieter streets, cleaner water and better biodiversity, because swathes of land will have been planted in government-subsidised native trees.
