COPENHAGEN, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Greenland said on Monday it has stripped a Chinese mining company of its licence to an iron ore deposit near the capital Nuuk, dealing a blow to attempts by Chinese companies to gain a foothold on the resource-rich Arctic island.

It would be "inconceivable" for Australia not to join the United States should Washington take action to defend Taiwan, Australian Defence Minister Peter Dutton said on Saturday.

On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said the United States and its allies would take unspecified "action" if China were to use force to alter the status quo over Taiwan.

The Kiribati Government has decided to open up one of the world’s largest marine reserves to commercial fishing and de-register it as a World Heritage site.

The Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) spans over 400,000 square kilometres and borders US waters.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has issued a warning to Asia Pacific nations not to "relapse into the confrontation and division of the Cold War era" during his APEC address. 

The President was the second world leader after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to speak at the APEC CEO Summit, hosted in Auckland. Media were alerted late on Wednesday night that Xi Jinping would speak in the opening session.
