A Russian state broadcaster has threatened to "drown" the United Kingdom using an underwater nuclear strike for assisting Ukraine.

Television presenter and propagandist Dmitry Kiselyov told viewers on his evening programme the Kremlin could unleash a nuclear attack on the UK in response to delivering weapons, as well as remarks from UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss claiming the war could end in conflict with NATO.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has provided military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine to help defend itself, however NATO (a military alliance between countries including the UK) has refused to send soldiers into the country to avoid an escalation of conflict with Russia.

Kiselyov, who has been dubbed 'Putin's mouthpiece', discussed the hypothetical attack while accompanied by an animated clip showing the route a missile would take with explosion-like sound effects.

"Why do they threaten vast Russia with nuclear weapons while they are only a small island?" Kiselyov asked.

"The island is so small that one Sarmat missile is enough to drown it once and for all… A single launch, Boris, and there is no England anymore."

He continued to discuss using an underwater nuclear-armed torpedo at a depth of 1km and speed of 200km per hour to hit the UK.

"Another option is to plunge Britain into the depths of the sea using Russia's unmanned underwater vehicle Poseidon."

He said the explosion would cause a "gigantic" tsunami wave up to 500m high.

"This tidal wave is also a carrier of extremely high doses of radiation. Surging over Britain, it will turn what is probably left of them into a radioactive desert, permanently unusable for anything."

A few days after Russia invaded Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin ordered his nuclear deterrence forces to be on high alert. And in March, the Kremlin said it could use nuclear weapons if its existence was threatened. However, experts have said nuclear war is unlikely.

Ukrainian Ambassador to the UN Sergiy Kyslytsya told Newshub Nation threats of nuclear war by Russia amount to "blackmail" as it would be suicide to Putin.
