One person has died after a crash in Twizel in Canterbury's Mackezie District.

Police say the crash happened near the intersection of Pukaki Canal and Glen Lyon Road today.

The road remains closed while the Serious Crash Unit examines the scene.

Motorists are advised to continue to avoid the area.
