South Korea became the latest nation to express interest in joining an Asia-Pacific trade deal, with the trade minister saying the government is “seriously and actively considering” the issue.
Korea’s overture comes after China and Taiwan submitted formal requests in recent weeks to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, or CPTPP, a free-trade pact between 11 countries around the Pacific Rim.

The deal - agreed to in principle, with the hope of concluding final negotiations by next year - was announced this morning.
It would eliminate tariffs on all UK goods into New Zealand, and tariffs on about 63 percent of goods currently exported to the country. Sheep meat and beef would be subject to tariffs but have a quota - increasing each year - for duty-free exports until the 15th year of the agreement, while butter and cheese would have tariffs reduced until the sixth year.

The new AUKUS defense pact between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States will go down as one of this year’s biggest foreign policy surprises.
By contrast, the announcement of a free trade agreement (FTA) between New Zealand and the United Kingdom was expected – only the exact timing was uncertain. The U.K. signed a particularly generous agreement with Australia in June, and New Zealand’s diplomats were clearly expecting to secure a very similar deal.
