A 'Robin Hood'-style policy, redistributing the big salaries of public service chief executives to lower paid workers, would be more effective than the Government-ordered pay freeze, according to a leading business academic.
The directive, which essentially means those in the public sector earning more than $60,000 will only get a pay rise in exceptional circumstances for the next three years, has infuriated some workers.

Staff and shoppers scrambled for safety from a stabbing frenzy in central Dunedin’s Countdown supermarket. Some were caught in the melee and some risked their lives to protect others. HAMISH McNEILLY and MARTIN VAN BEYNEN report.
By 2.30pm on May 10, a warm sunny Monday in Dunedin, the Countdown supermarket at 309 Cumberland St had already been open for eight hours.

A new global system should be set up to respond faster to disease outbreaks to help ensure no future virus causes a pandemic as devastating as COVID-19, an independent World Health Organization review panel said on Wednesday.
The experts found crucial shortcomings in the global response in early 2020 - including a delay in declaring an emergency, a failure to impose travel restrictions and an entire "lost month" when countries neglected to respond to warnings - that let the virus quickly spread into a crippling pandemic.
