Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is optimistic Kiribati will return to the Pacific Islands Forum whānau after the former British colony withdrew its support for the regional body.
Kiribati President Taneti Maamau announced the move last week because his government is not happy with the group’s leadership.

Niue Premier Dalton Tagelagi has arrived in Wellington and met with New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
It is the first time Niue's leader visited the New Zealand Parliament. He is in the country ahead of competing in the Commonwealth Games which begin on July 28 in the UK.

China is asking the UN to bury a highly-anticipated report on human rights violations in Xinjiang, according to a Chinese letter seen by Reuters and confirmed by diplomats from three countries who received it.
UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet has faced severe criticism from civil society for being too soft on China during a May visit and has since said she will refrain from seeking a second term for personal reasons.
