Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta has promised more sanctions on Russia with officials working now to identify Russian interests in New Zealand.

The government has imposed its first tranche of sanctions - targeting Russia's President Vladimir Putin, and 12 other senior figures - but none have assets here.

Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson is calling on the global community to "remain unified" after United States officials accused China of helping Russia as it invades Ukraine. 

The US warned China during "intense" talks on Monday against helping Vladimir Putin's regime after intelligence purportedly leaked to the Financial Times and CNN alleged that China had signalled willingness to provide aid to Russia.

The Russian embassy in New Zealand is using social media posts to justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, reigniting a call for Russia’s ambassador to be expelled.

The embassy of the Russian Federation in New Zealand, headquartered in Wellington, has ramped up the frequency of its posts since Russia launched its attack on Ukraine on February 24.

The Government will look at ways to help refugees from the war in Ukraine, including helping those with family here reunite, Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi says. 

Speaking on Newshub Nation Faafoi said Cabinet will meet next week to discuss how to help New Zealand-based Ukrainain families who want to bring relatives here.

A third Russian Major General has been killed in the Ukraine conflict, landing another blow on Vladimir Putin's invasion plans. 

Ukrainian officials said Major General Andrei Kolesnikov, commander of the 29th army of Russia's eastern district, had been killed.
