HILIPPINE SEA -- USNS Rappahannock (T-AO 204) conducts an underway replenishment with HMNZS Aotearoa (A11) in the Philippine Sea, Sept. 20. The U.S. Navy’s fleet replenishment oiler provided fuel and other critical supplies to the Royal New Zealand Navy’s sustainment ship. Military Sealift Command Far East ensures ships like Rapphannock are manned, trained and equipped to deliver essential supplies, fuel, cargo and equipment to U.S. forces, allies and partners, both at sea and on shore. As the U.S. Navy's largest forward-deployed fleet, 7th Fleet employs 50-70 ships and submarines across the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. U.S. 7th Fleet routinely operates and interacts with 35 maritime nations while conducting missions to preserve and protect a free and open Indo-Pacific Region. From October 1 to 3, China dispatched 93 military aircraft into the airspace of the Taiwan Strait. On the 4th, it set a record of 52 in a single day. The alarming number has angered the United States, and the State Department issued a special statement condemning China's "provocative actions" for destabilizing. Just more than ten hours after the U.S. expressed its position, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force issued a press release at noon on the 4th , confirming that joint exercises will be held in the waters southwest of Okinawa with the navies of the United States, Britain, the Netherlands, Canada, and New Zealand from October 2 to 3. The purpose of the exercise is to strengthen cooperation and "realize a free and open Indo-Pacific region." International public opinion has also interpreted it as an intention to declare combat power and express a position to China.

Most of New Zealand looks set to stay at alert level 2 after an outbreak of Covid-19 in Waikato was confirmed on Sunday.
The latest virus spread triggered stricter lockdown measures around Hamilton and makes it unlikely the Government will use Monday’s scheduled review to relax the rules elsewhere. However, at least one expert is calling for a more nuanced approach to ease restrictions in the South Island.
