The US 7th Fleet flagship USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) has arrived in Wellington, marking its first visit to New Zealand and its capital city.
The USS Blue Ridge, which serves as the command ship for the US 7th Fleet, is responsible for operational planning and command across the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. Its mission includes regional engagement and maritime security cooperation with allies and partners.
During the port call, senior crew from the 7th Fleet will meet with New Zealand Defence Force counterparts and local officials to discuss operational readiness, future military capabilities, and broader bilateral cooperation, the US embassy said.
"This historic port visit by the USS Blue Ridge and our 7th Fleet team speaks to deep ties the United States and New Zealand share," said Vice Admiral Fred Kacher, commander, US 7th Fleet.
“Our partnership is rooted in our common values and respect, and our visit here represents an important opportunity for us to further strengthen the bond between our nations and our navies.”
While in port, sailors from Blue Ridge and the 7th Fleet will take part in community events, band performances, and local sightseeing. The visit will also include ship resupply and refuelling, though the vessel will not be open to the public.
The last US navy vessels to visit Wellington were USS Howard (DDG 83) in 2021 and USS Sampson (DDG 102) in 2016.
