The Defence Force is again warning the government it is in a dire state, describing it as vulnerable and the Navy as extremely fragile.

Staff have left in droves and it was now looking at making it easier to meet the minimum entry requirements for education, health and fitness.

There is a huge difference between friends and allies and partners and it is not all to do with defence. You have to add in history, trade, tourism, and other governmental ties etc. People tend to think when you say ally that you instantly mean defence.

While I am not agreeing or disagreeing with his statement I understand where he is coming from.

As the NZ military prepares to sell off decades-old aircraft, it has been revealed it passed up an offer to expand its fleet of helicopters . The New Zealand Defence Force turned down an opportunity to buy additional helicopters from Australia due to the “challenging and costly” task of adapting them, not because of personnel shortages, the military says.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) is reportedly considering a move to axe its eight-strong fleet of SH-2G(I) Super Seasprite multi-role maritime helicopters as part of a 6.5% cut in defence spending – equivalent to NZ$150m (US$91.23m) – that has been requested by the New Zealand government.
