The Crown previously tried to use anti-terror laws against the Isis sympathiser shot dead by police following a knife attack at a West Auckland supermarket – but it was turned down by the courts.
The man was facing charges of possessing a hunting knife and possessing objectionable publications that included Isis videos of extreme violence, and the Crown sought to also have him charged under the Terror Suppression Act, claiming he was planning a “knife attack”.

The Prime Minister has confirmed the man being Friday’s terrorist attack in Auckland, who was shot dead by police after stabbing six people in a supermarket, was a violent extremist known to police.
Witnesses described scenes of mass hysteria as several people were attacked before the assailant was shot during the incident at Countdown, Lynn Mall, New Lynn, on Friday afternoon.

Police have shot and killed a man who entered a west Auckland supermarket and injured multiple people on Friday afternoon.
The incident occurred at the LynnMall Countdown.
It's not yet known how many people are injured, but police say they will provide further information as soon as it is available.

A third student is being investigated by police after she flew out of Covid-hit Auckland without permission – further emphasising the possibility numerous other rule breakers might have exploited lax airport security and slipped out of the city during lockdown.
The Te Herenga Waka–Victoria University student travelled to Wellington on Wednesday afternoon, just hours before changes to security at Auckland Airport were announced.

A spokesman for the Taliban has admitted there may not be any women in high positions when it forms a new government in Afghanistan.
The militant group, which seized the country two weeks ago, is expected to arrange its new government in the next two days, according to the deputy head of its political office in Qatar, Sher Abbas Stanekzai.

After the Taliban seized Afghanistan last month, the militant group made a point of issuing conciliatory words.
On 17 August, spokesman Suhail Shaheen spoke of a “new chapter” in the country, and a desire to provide its people with “prosperous lives”.
Later that day, another Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed at a press conference that anyone who “fought against us” – as well as the interpreters and contractors who supported Allied efforts over the past 20 years – would be pardoned.

The man who allegedly absconded from quarantine (MIQ) in Auckland while infected with COVID-19 has been granted bail.
He was a community case who entered the Novotel & Ibis Ellerslie MIQ facility on Wednesday evening and allegedly escaped in the early hours of Thursday.

A man with the deadly Delta strain of COVID-19 has been arrested after allegedly breaking out of a quarantine facility, putting Aucklanders and Auckland's lift out of lockdown at risk.
Newshub understands this is allegedly not his first escape. Initially, after the man tested positive, he was allowed by the Ministry of Health to isolate at home.
