Allegedly, the defence environment has changed, and New Zealand thus needs to spend significantly more on Defence. Three Chinese naval vessels have been sailing in international waters off Australia's east coast and conducting live-fire exercises, causing trans-Tasman flights to divert.

The fleet consists of the Jiangkai-class frigate Hengyang, the Renhai-class cruiser Zunyi and the Fuchi-class replenishment vessel Weishanhu.

New Zealand's Defence Minister Judith Collins has warned that the Chinese naval task group conducting military exercises in the Tasman Sea is "extremely capable", with one of the warships carrying ballistic missiles with a range of about 1,000 kilometres.
