New Zealand Defence Force personnel are heading to Poland to train Ukraine's Armed Forces.
The training initiative is called Operation LEGIO, and is a multi-national initiative led by Norway. Troops from other countries such as Denmark, Finland, and Norway will participate.
Minister of Defence Chris Penk made the announcement today saying, “New Zealand remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia’s illegal and unprovoked full-scale invasion".
New Zealand troops have helped train Ukrainians since 2022.
Ukraine had requested that Operation LEGIO takes place closer to their borders - Poland borders them to the west.
Poland is also currently the main logistical hub for support to Ukraine, and cornerstone of NATO's eastern flank.
Penk said New Zealand's contribution is valued by Ukraine, and our troops are highly regarded for their "expertise and professionalism".
