The Armed Offenders Squad is responding to a firearms incident in Invercargill.

Police were called to the incident on Brown St in Strathern, Invercargill, about 7.40pm.

There they located a man with an apparent gunshot wound.

He is being treated in Southland Hospital. He is understood to be seriously injured.

Cordons are in place in the area the incident occurred, and Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police say residents should expect a continued police presence in the area this evening.
