A man shot in Foxton has died of his injuries.

The 47-year-old man was rushed to Palmerston North Hospital on Monday morning after being shot in the leg at a Main St property in the Horowhenua town.

He was in a critical condition and died on Tuesday, police have confirmed.

Police have arrested a 46-year-old man and charged him with murder. He will appear in court in Palmerston North on Wednesday.

Schools and the public library were placed in lockdown and much of the town cordoned off on Monday during a manhunt for the gunman.



It is understood the shooter was wearing a Nomads gang vest.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said police made the arrest in the Foxton area on Tuesday. The firearm believed to have been used had been found.

A scene examination was ongoing and was expected to continue overnight on Tuesday, Sheridan said.

Police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident, but say they are unable to comment further now the matter is before the court.

Police put up cordon tape at an alleyway on Main St in Foxton, near where the fatal shooting took place on Monday.

A witness told Stuff the shooting had occurred at a flat on Main St.

A Facebook page belonging to the man understood to have died had a post on Monday appearing to show he was having a conflict with another party.
