This week, in favourable sea conditions and 250 nautical miles southeast of Tonga, the crew of HMNZS Aotearoa retrieved a Deep Ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami (DART) buoy that had been drifting since it broke its mooring in December.

The buoy was part of a network managed by the National Emergency Management Agency that provides tsunami monitoring and detection coverage for New Zealand and the southwest Pacific.

A Twitter exchange between Scottish authorities and a member of the public has gone viral after Queen Elizabeth II was mistaken for a giant navy ship with a similar name.

Scotland police issued a public notice advising that due to the presence of HMS Queen Elizabeth in the Firth of Clyde, no aircraft were allowed to fly within 3 nautical miles of the ship.

I have thought about this over and over and have changed my mind many times at what I think the future Royal New Zealand Navy should consist of. I have seen other articles that consist of submarines and various other equipment that while New Zealand can technically afford them, there is more to it that just saying we need to have submarines.

One of the issues we have is that the various New Zealand Governments have not had a clear focus on what they want the entire defence force to do... Yes defend the country and our interests. But what does that actually entail. And until we know that you can not design a defence force to defend it.

Royal New Zealand Navy warship HMNZS Aotearoa made a port visit to Fleet Base East in Sydney, New South Wales, on 13 March 2021. Aotearoa has been exercising off the east coast of Australia to test her capabilities in international waters. This has included Replenishment at Sea (RAS) exercises with Royal Australian Navy guided missile destroyer HMAS Hobart and frigate HMAS Stuart. The RAS training was a chance to strengthen relationships between the two neighbouring countries and has showcased Navy's interoperability at sea with its counterparts.

The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) will be bringing Exercise Skytrain to Wanaka and the surrounding regions from 15 – 26 March 2021.

Exercise Skytrain is a C-130 Hercules training activity used by No. 40 Squadron to consolidate skills learnt at Base Auckland. The exercise provides crews with a range of flying training including over unfamiliar and challenging terrain, coordinating pallet drops into drop zones and landing the aircraft on runways different to those in Auckland.
