Police in the US say five people are dead, including a shooter, and at least 21 injured by gunfire in a West Texas shooting on Saturday (Sunday NZ time).

"The active shooter was shot and killed at the Cinergy in Odessa," Midland police said on Facebook, referring to a cinema complex in the cities of Odessa and Midland. "There is no active shooter at this time."

Midland Mayor Jerry Morales told CNN the shooter was shot and killed in the parking lot: "We're hoping it's just one shooter and we have contained him," Reuters reported.

A 17-month-old who was shot in the face was among the victims, KWES-TV news reported.


Odessa police chief says at least 5 people were killed and 21 injured after a mass shooting in Texas, in a "horrific" day.

The suspect was driving a vehicle that a law enforcement officer stopped before the shootings, police said.

Authorities the mass shooting began when a man started firing through the rear window of his car with a rifle.

Authorities say a total of three law enforcement officers were shot. Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Katherine Cesinger said the suspect then fled "and continued shooting innocent people." 

Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke described the suspected shooter as a white male in his 30s.

The television station CBS7 reported armed police ran through the Music City Mall in Odessa where CBS7 is located and the building went into lockdown, Reuters said.

The shooting came after 22 people were killed at a Walmart store about 400 kilometres west of Midland in city of El Paso, Texas, on August 2.

June 28, 2018: Jarrod Ramos shot through the windows of the Capital Gazette offices in Annapolis, Maryland, before turning the weapon on employees there, killing five at The Capital newspaper. Authorities say Ramos had sent threatening letters to the newspaper prior to the attack.

May 18, 2018: Dimitrios Pagourtzis began shooting during an art class at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas. The 17-year-old killed eight students and two teachers and 13 others were wounded. Explosive were found at the school and off campus.

November 5, 2017: Devin Patrick Kelley, who had been discharged from the Air Force after a conviction for domestic violence, used an AR-style firearm to shoot up a congregation at a small church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, killing more than two dozen.

October 1, 2017: Stephen Paddock opened fire on an outdoor music festival on the Las Vegas Strip from the 32nd floor of a hotel-casino, killing 58 people and wounding more than 500. SWAT teams with explosives then stormed his room and found he had killed himself.
