Benefits versus consequences of the minimum wage was the hottest topic on The Huddle.

The minimum wage and benefit levels get a boost today, as part of a package of changes coming into effect from April 1.

Those on the minimum wage get a pay bump to $20 an hour - an increase many employers say is too much and badly timed.

Main benefit and superannuation levels also rise, as well as the amount people can earn before their benefit reduces.

But at least one restaurant owner has told Newstalk ZB that the increase means they have to lift wages for all staff to put them above the minimum wage employees - while they also might have to raise prices.

Political commentator Hayden Munro and ZB host Tim Beveridge took opposing views on the issue while on The Huddle with Heather du Plessis-Allan - as well as debating whether the country is ready for a trans-Tasman bubble.
