National Party MP Chris Bishop is going into self-isolation following a recent trip to Australia.

He travelled to Australia on Friday morning and returned to New Zealand on Saturday evening.

He says Healthline advised him that although there's no legal obligation for him to self-isolate, they would prefer that he did.

"After I returned home last night I have confined myself to our house in Petone. I have no symptoms and am feeling totally fine," Bishop wrote in a Facebook post.

"My number one priority is serving the people of the Hutt Valley, it will just have to be in a different way for the next two weeks."

Any meetings he had over the next fortnight will now either be done over the phone or they'll be rescheduled.

He's "disappointed" he'll no longer be able to attend community events including the Korokoro School gala and the Eastbourne Cricket Club anniversary match.

For other community events, he says there are some cases where they can be rescheduled or other MPs can step in for him.
