Ricky Gervais opened the 77th Golden Globe Awards by aggressively calling out the star-studded audience for their morals.

Warning off any winner who might be contemplating using their speech to push a social or political agenda, Gervais told the crowd: "You're in no position to lecture the public about anything".

"You say you're woke, but the companies you work for - unbelievable," he said.

"I mean, Amazon, Apple, Disney - if ISIS started a streaming service, you'd call your agent, wouldn't ya?"

The Office star, who announced it would be the last time he hosted the awards and that he "didn't care anymore", then set out a strict set of instructions for winners.

"So, if you do win an award tonight, don't use it as a platform to make a political speech. You're in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world.

"Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. So, if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent, and your God, and f**k off, okay?"

Gervais also singled out various celebrities, slinging shade at Martin Scorcese for his height, Felicity Huffman for being incarcerated and Leonardo DiCaprio for his dating habits.

Referring to the nearly three-hour-long run time of Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Gervais said: "Leonardo DiCaprio attended the premiere, and by the end, his date was too old for him."

DiCaprio laughed off the reference to his penchant for dating younger women, but Gervais wasn't quite finished.

"Even Prince Andrew was like 'Come on Leo, mate'."

Elsewhere in his opening monologue, Gervais joked about paedophiles, the pope and Jeffery Epstein, while the camera cut back to shots of shocked actors like Tom Hanks and Cate Blanchett.
