A magnitude 5.2 earthquake has hit the east coast of the North Island, near Gisborne.

The quake, 20km northwest of Matawai, was recorded by GeoNet at 4.29pm on Monday.

The quake was 43 kilometres deep and was felt along the entire east coast.

One tweeter reported "a strange wobble, sitting at my desk in Napier on the hill", via the Science Learning Hub account.

The shake was centred near Matawai, a settlement in the Gisborne region.

Vanessa Immink tweeted the she felt a huge shake in Whakatāne, and Matt Ensor said it was "really felt" in Ōhope.

A user who goes by Lucid said it was minor but noticeable in Tauranga, and their lights were swinging.

People up and down the coast reported their differing experiences of the earthquake: rocking and rolling in Whakatāne, a rattler in Kawerau, a big jolt in Edgecumbe, and gentle shake in Wainuiomata, near Wellington.

One Te Kaha, East Cape, resident said their kids went running out of the house, and a commenter from Tirohanga, near Ōpōtiki, said the house "rocked and rolled".
