One woman has died and two others are seriously injured after a stairwell collapsed during a party in Dunedin.

Otago Coastal police area commander Inspector Marty Gray said the incident occurred during a party at a flat, known as The Manor, on Dundas St on Saturday night.

"Ambulance and police were called to a Dundas Street property just before midnight after the occupants had called for assistance to shut down a party.

The student flat is known as The Manor.

"On police arrival, a large number of people were in the process of leaving the property, and there were reports of people being injured as they did so."

One woman died as a result of injuries, while two others received serious injuries, Gray said.

"If you were at the party and have not spoken to police, we would ask you to please get in touch, to help us piece together what happened."

A witness said a stairway had partially collapsed.

Victim Support is available for those who were present.

A witness told Stuff a stairwell inside the all-male student flat had partially collapsed.

Police say one woman died in the incident.

Glass littered the street on Sunday morning, along with seven individual shoes.

The flat is two blocks away from Castle St North, where a balcony collapsed during a secret concert on March 4, 2016.
